Being based on a novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski – a bestselling Polish author – gives the game’s universe and characters credibility, authority and exceptional cohesiveness. In this harsh fantasy world abstract, absolute and unconditional ideas such as “Good” and “Evil” written in upper case letters do not exist. Instead, however, while moral good exists , the protagonist will often only have a choice between two evils, deciding on the path which he regards as the lesser evil of the two. The game also features an innovative, time delayed decision-consequence system, prodding players to make their decisions seriously and with thought.
The game begins when Geralt of Rivia, one of a few remaining "witchers" – traveling monster hunters for hire, gifted with unnatural powers, is transported to the witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen by fellow witchers who had discovered him unconscious in a field. Geralt remembers almost nothing of his life before that point. He is taken to Kaer Morhen, the base of the witchers, where he meets a sorceress named Triss Merigold. The castle is attacked by a gang of bandits named Salamandra, led by a criminal known as the Professor, a mage named Savolla who controls a large, praying mantis-like monster, and another mage named Azar Javed. The witchers and the sorceress manage to slay the monster and kill Savolla, but the Professor and Azar manage to escape with the mutagens that genetically alter the witchers. After curing Triss of the wounds she received while fighting Javed, Geralt and the rest of the witchers head off in different directions in order to find information on Salamandra.

The Witcher’s story surprised me. There are many themes in this game: politics, sex, alchemy, magic, destiny, the holy grail, mutants… I had no previous knowledge of the Witcher universe, but its amazing. Geralt is smart and charming. The game makes you feel like your choices matter, it even makes you feel guilt about them later. Except about the way you treat women, where sexist attitudes are rewarded, unfortunately.
The Witcher is series from Poland, land of my ancestors. They seem to be very proud of this achievement, as the prime minister of Poland gave a copy of The Witcher 2 to President Obama.
The political issue in The Witcher has to do with a religious and military organization that hates non-humans (elves and dwarves, who represent the native peoples). Non-humans in turn are fighting for freedom and equal rights, appealing to guerrilla tactics and resistance. Druids represent environmentalists, helping non-humans when they can. Witchers, monster hunters, represent a small and powerful group of people who prefer to stay neutral, but that ends up being used by both sides of the conflict.
The game has several technical problems: missing information at crucial times, the combat system is bad, but what really disappoints is the sexism in a game that flirts with feminist statements, but ends up being sexist. In the game we see women in positions of power, leading the revolution against oppression, while the old trope of damsel in distress is repeated. Moreover, the sex scenes are presented aiming the straight audience, even when it is lesbian sex.
Geralt is the typical male advocating for feminists, but always with a sexual interest. In the game you can choose not to have sex with every woman you help, but the opportunity exists, and that choice doesn’t result in any problem. Geralt defends women from the most fanatical religious and political moralists, but still relies a lot on sexist symbols of power.
Another aspect is the racial and territorial issue. In the game, dwarves and elves are the original peoples, whose lands were invaded by humans. They are considered inferior, untrustworthy, and often massacred in the name of security, though they have superior knowledge, from which the invaders sometimes they take advantage.
Conclusion: Although I have issues with the game, it’s still one of the best RPGs I’ve played.
Story, characters and atmosphere in this game, is nothing short of amazing.
however, the gameplay is very lacking and clunky.
