You don’t have impulse engines or warp drives or bottomless fuel tanks that can carry you from planet to planet as a day trip.
You just have a tank of liquid oxygen, maneuvering thrusters, and a slide rule. You spend months idle in transfer orbits for a shot at glory.
You don’t have blasters, or death rays, or plasma guns, filling the black with bright colours and fantastic sounds.
You just have machine-guns, industrial lasers and rockets. The ship shudders when they fire, but the only sound you hear is your own breathing.
You don’t have a sleek space fighter with impervious energy shields and an FTL drive, swooping through space on wings.
You tumble through space in a small pod, with nothing but a few centimeters of steel and glass between you and the cold, uncaring void.
