Another representative of the EA Sports hockey game series, which was launched in 1993, with products for the SEGA Genesis console. Compared to the original and later PC equivalents, this edition of NHL Hockey is characterized by a completely innovative approach to simulating one of the most spectacular winter sports disciplines.
The greatest progress has been made in the audiovisual sphere. This is the first Electronic Arts product that uses the famous Virtual Stadium graphics engine and thus allows you to watch the action from several cameras, located in different places around the three-dimensional field. Just like in the twin production of FIFA Soccer from the same year, also in NHL Hockey the players’ figures are built of sprites and in high resolution they look exceptionally ugly. However, this is not as great a shortcoming in the face of the huge dose of satisfaction that proper participation in hockey tournaments gives. The action is fast, dynamic and, most importantly, very realistic. Crisis situations at the opponent’s gate can even result in fights. Admittedly, Mortal Kombat is not that, but the possibility of treating the opponent with a fist is in itself a big attraction. The game has a sensational soundtrack, in which apart from standard sounds, music and shouts of the audience, there is also a professional announcer, commenting on all the actions taken by you on the ice sheet.
EA Sports allows you to play a single match with any NHL team, or immediately with a full season. You can also try to connect via modem and compete with a live opponent. The last thing worth mentioning is the extensive information about the league itself. You can closely follow the results of the 94/95 season, see pictures of most of the players playing there every day and get different, valuable news.
