Life Is Strange: Episode 4 – Dark Room
Dark Room is the fourth episode of the five-part episodic adventure series
Life Is Strange. It is DLC for the first episode Life Is Strange: Episode 1
– Chrysalis along with the second and third one and it is only available
separately for the PlayStation versions. For the other platforms it can be
acquired through Life Is Strange: Season Pass or Life Is Strange: Complete
Season.
The episode starts with a short recap of the previous events, customized for
each player based on the decisions they took in the previous ones. At the end
of the previous episode Max traveled back the furthest in time she ever went
and now faces the consequences of the choices she made. The initial part of
the episode is based around that decision, which one of the two timelines she
wants to live with. After that the focus is back on Nathan Prescott, his
family, their influence and how this is tied to the events and the
disappearance of Rachel Amber. Some scenes can only be played if they follow a
choice made in the previous episodes. If another path was chosen, those scenes
are not part of the gameplay. Some familiar locations return such as the
school, the dormitories and the junkyard, but there are also new ones such as
a barn, the beach and the Vortex Club party in the school’s swimming pool.
After the strange phenomena of the previous episodes, the looming eco-disaster
is furthered through the appearance of two moons.
The gameplay is identical to the previous episodes with the time rewinding
mechanic, important and minor choices and the way she can interact with
people. There is a new page with locations in her book, optional photos to
take and her diary is furthered based on the decisions. The focusing technique
from the previous episode returns. In this episode there is an elaborate
puzzle where a very large amount of clues on a board need to be matched to
progress. There is also an encounter with a complex conversation branch and
different outcomes with a lasting impact.
