Bloody Roar: Hyper Beast Duel is the first installment of a popular series of three-dimensional battles, where warriors can transform into special forms that give them numerous additional animal skills. This production was created by Hudson Soft and its publisher in Europe was Virgin Interactive.
### Mechanics
Bloody Roar: Hyper Beast Duel on PS1 is quite a typical fighter genre, with two warriors facing each other in a three-dimensional ring. They fight each other until one of them has exhausted their vitality. The distinguishing feature of Hudson Soft’s production compared to the competition is a special strap that loads during the fight. After filling up enough, the player can transform his character into the corresponding animal alter ego, with a greater range of blows, strength and/or speed than the human form of a given warrior. Accepting damage as a beast reduces the bar. After the player is completely exhausted, the player will return to the normal character. Due to this mechanics, fights take on an additional tactical dimension – choosing the right moment for a change of form may determine the outcome of the battle.
Eight playable characters are at the player’s disposal. Each of them has a different animal variety into which it can be transformed. The latter include a wolf, a lion or a tiger, as well as more unusual beasts like a mole or a rabbit.
### Technical issues
Bloody Roar graphic design: Hyper Beast Duel on PS1 at the time of the game’s debut stood out positively from other fighters, offering high quality character models and smooth motion animations.
