In the beginning, the Balaur, a powerful race of servitors created by the god Aion roamed the world of Atreia. However, their own will led them to disobey Aion’s wishes and they rebelled against their creator. They ravaged the lands inhabited by humans massacring them. Aion then created the Empyrean Lords, beings that could use Aether. The Empyrean Lords created a barrier which prevented the Balaur from attacking those under its protection. However this barrier could only encompass the lands outside the tower of Aion. Inside civilization flourished once again, but outside the Balaur killed every living thing, daring the Empyrian Lords to come out of the safety of the barrier. With time humans capable of harnessing Aether arose, these were called Daeva and like the Empyrean Lords had wings. Even though the Daevas were less powerful as individuals then the Balaur, Aion gave them a sense of loyalty and worship towards himself so they would obey him in all matters.
