9: The Dark Side of Notre Dame
9: The Dark Side of Notre Dame begins with a nobleman’s daughter who attends
the Paris Festival of Fools and through strange events goes missing. The
player is called in to investigate the disappearance of the girl by the Paris
police. Eye witness accounts from others at the festival describe unreal
events of the young girl being whisked away by the gargoyles of Notre Dame. It
appears the reanimation of the gargoyles is link to a powerful stone sapphire
from the past. It was divided many years ago but in doing so has created both
good and evil stone fragments. The corrupting fragment is in the hands of
Arkivus who has used its evil energy to become immortal and now craves even
more power. As the title implies the adventure takes place in and around the
famed cathedral of Notre Dame.
The player interface and game mechanics provide a hybrid approach of graphical
adventure with on screen movement touch points, puzzles and hidden-object
search style game play. Objects collected in inventory at the bottom of the
screen require the player to drop or drag them onto other items in the scenes
to activate or complete needed tasks for progression. Hidden object scenes are
somewhat traditional with word objects at the bottom. Some scene objects must
be opened, moved or used to finally reveal the object to be found. Objects
requiring this function are listed in a different colored text.
