Sonic FreeRunner is a mass project made by heavily modifying Mark the Echidna and Damizean’s BlitzSonic engine; built for the sole purpose of translating classic Sonic gameplay into the third dimension with little to no flaws, and possibly advancing beyond that level.
The concept behind the game is for Sonic to be in a semi-open world, where the storyline drives you to your next destination (even though the story in itself is no more detailed than SCD’s opening/ending). Imagine the layout being like the “adventure stage” hubworlds from Sonic Adventure, but the game is nothing but those just connected by different entrances and exits. However, level layout design is heavily inspired by the Genesis games; where there are tons of hills and surreal land formations, loops, open areas, slopes, walls you can run on, branching paths, area-specific gimmicks and much more. The world is a free area, and you can go wherever you like and do what you want (that is once you go everywhere when completing the game).
The control setup would be much like this:
Arrow Keys / WASD = Movement
Space Bar / Mouse button 1 = Spin Jump
Z / Mouse button 2 = Crouch / Spin Attack
Mouse movement = Camera
Sonic’s controls are similar to the Genesis games, where his gameplay is based around momentum and rolling physics. However Sonic also has an array of combat moves such as sliding and attacking enemies with a sweeping kick, as well as an air slash and shield attack moveset ala Sonic 3 & Knuckles. You also will have Tails following you at all times, and Sonic will have a (optional) mini-map / compass that points him to the destination of his next objective.
