Being terminal was easy. There was some serenity, knowing when it would all end. Then I heard about the Afterglow program. I was skeptical at first, but who wouldn’t be? They promised immortality in exchange for being the first volunteer. So I thought, “what do I have to lose?” If only I knew…
They stuck me with needles, wires, and cables. They literally poked around in my brain. That wasn’t even the hard part. It was the suffering that followed. The pain I went through. I am always suffering.
I don’t know how I feel anymore. I don’t feel terminal, I feel fear. I see all of these familiar places, but certain things aren’t right. They aren’t as I remember them. I’m supposedly reborn, but where am I now? This is some sort of nightmare that I keep trying to outrun. The darkness always finds me, the past is catching up. I’m left with more questions than answers. Will this ever end? Am I alive?
